The Falaise Memorial - The Civilians War

During your visit to the Falaise Memorial, discover three large spaces: one dedicated to the daily life of civilians under Occupation, another on the liberation and an immersive room plunging you into the heart of the hell of the bombings of the Second World War.
Pupils can analyze archive documents, discover historical objects and explore the different rooms of the museum which successively address: daily life under the Occupation, the Vichy regime, the Resistance, persecutions, genocide and the Normandy landings.

La Cité de la Mer

This huge museum devoted to the sea contains a hi-tech exhibition on the Titanic. Organise an unforgettable day during which you and your group will live an adventure, have fun, and learn all there is to know about deep-sea exploration. Teacher resources are available.

Bayeux

This quaint medieval market town is famous as the home of the Bayeux Tapestry (closed for refurbishment Aug 2025 – Oct 2027), which tells the epic story of the Norman conquest of England. Visitors can also admire the town’s magnificent Gothic cathedral, a stunning example of medieval architecture. Bayeux is also dotted with charming shops and traditional cafés, giving students plenty of opportunities to practise their French.

Aquarium at St Malo

This colourful aquarium presents eight themed exhibition rooms from cold abyssal waters to warm tropical waters, where students can discover around 10,000 fishes or more than 600 species. There’s also a touch pool and a new exhibition each year.

Mémorial de Caen

Mémorial de Caen offers an in-depth journey into the heart of 20th-century history, covering events from World War II, the Cold War, and the challenges faced by the world today. Students can explore interactive exhibits and immerse themselves in the dramatic history of Normandy during the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy. A highlight of the visit is the 30-minute film that vividly recounts these historic events, offering students a powerful visual experience.

Activities based around several themes can be organised, subject to availability. Online teacher resources are available.

Honfleur

Explore the streets and harbour of the typically French port town, Honfleur. Having avoided destruction during WWII, it still proudly retains its authentic Norman charm, with half-timbered houses, narrow alleyways, and a vibrant marina. The town’s artistic heritage is also noteworthy, having inspired famous painters such as Claude Monet and the Impressionists.

Arromanches

Gain an insight into WWII at this historic seaside resort closely linked to the Allied Landings. Key visits during Normandy French language school trips include the Invasion Museum, which showcases the construction and significance of the Mulberry Harbour, and the impressive 360° cinema, where students can experience powerful wartime footage.

Port-en-Bessin

This charming fishing port gives students an opportunity to explore a typical French town. Rich in maritime heritage, watch fishermen at work and see the daily catch being brought in for a real glimpse into coastal life in Normandy. With its quaint streets, fresh seafood stalls, and friendly locals, Port-en-Bessin provides an authentic setting for students to practise their language skills.

Biscuiterie

A very popular visit, the Biscuiterie gives students the chance to learn about traditional Normandy baking techniques and even get hands-on experience making local specialities such as buttery biscuits and pastries.

Goat Farm

A working farm where students will take a guided tour, in French, that shows each stage of the cheese making process.

Rouen

Rouen, the historic capital of Upper Normandy, is where the Catholic saint, Joan of Arc, was famously tried and burned at the stake in 1431.
