Maths LIVE! Student Event at Disneyland® Paris

Sophie Maclean is a mathematician and experienced maths communicator currently studying for a PhD in Maths in London. When not discovering new maths, Sophie shares her love of maths with others by delivering talks and workshops all around the UK and beyond. Sophie has spoken at the Cheltenham Science Festival, been featured on BBC and Channel 5 news, and writes articles via both the Heidelberg Laureate Forum and as part of the Chalkdust team.

Bobby Seagull MBE is a maths teacher, author, TV broadcaster and vocal advocate for numeracy. After rising to fame from BBC quiz show University Challenge, Bobby started a broadcasting career hosting BBC road trip show Monkman & Seagull's Genius Guides, He balances a reality TV career with teaching (taking part in Netflix dating show Indian Matchmaking and winning C4 Celebrity Hunted). He is a regular on daytime TV and has published The Life-Changing Magic of Numbers.

Dr Matt Pritchard is an award‑winning magician, comedian and science and maths communicator who brings learning to life through curiosity, creativity and wonder. With a background in atomic physics research at Durham University, Matt combines deep scientific knowledge with exceptional communication skills. During his time at Durham, he won the Institute of Physics’ Postgraduate Lecturer Award, recognising his ability to explain challenging concepts clearly and engagingly. He later joined the education department at Thinktank Science Museum in Birmingham, where he presented shows, delivered workshops and helped develop educational resources for schools and families.

Now working as an independent science communicator, he performs to more than 30,000 people each year and collaborates with organisations such as The Royal Society, the Royal Institution and the British Science Festival. With 18 years of experience working with school and family audiences, Matt is a true “Curator of Wonder” – perfectly placed to engage students, spark curiosity and show that science and maths are not just subjects to study, but tools to amaze, explore and understand the world.. Alongside his academic career, Matt has spent over 25 years as a professional magician and is an Associate of the Inner Magic Circle – an honour held by only around 300 people worldwide. 

Our complementary workbooks are designed to be used as your group enjoy the Disney® Parks. The workbooks contain park challenges which encourage students to take a step back and critically appraise the resort from their subject perspective. These park challenges provide opportunity for problem solving, decision making as well as working together so that your students get the maximum from the their time at Disneyland® Paris.

Our lively and interactive question and answer session gives the students control to ask the questions they want answers to. All the speakers take to the stage to answer questions to provide different perspectives and to offer invaluable career advice from their own experience.

Vanessa Madu is a mathematician, science communicator and PhD researcher in Statistical Machine Learning at Imperial College London, where she develops new methods for predicting ocean surface currents. She also teaches mathematics at the London School of Economics and has spoken at the Royal Institution's main lecture theatre to over 300 students. Her approach is what one interviewer called "mathematics by stealth": she leads with wonder and whimsy, and by the time students realise they have been doing mathematics, they are already enjoying it. Vanessa believes that mathematics is the closest thing we have to magic and makes it her mission to help others discover that for themselves.

In 1992, a shipping container fell overboard in the North Pacific, spilling 29,000 plastic bath toys into the ocean. 
In her talk, Vanessa will take you inside the mathematics of the ocean: how we build models of something too vast to measure directly, what the infamous Navier-Stokes equations actually say, and how all of this helps us understand and protect our changing planet.
