Our expert speakers are selected to meet the learning objectives of the maths curriculum at KS4 and students can put their own questions to our experts during a Q&A session. As part of this immersive maths event students take part in park challenges covering the fundamentals of maths at KS4 in a practical and fun way.

Event overview

Expert speaker presentations - through real life experiences our speakers will give students the chance to hear how mathematics can be used to develop models of real situations and learn that they can be more or less effective depending on the assumptions that have been made.

Q&A session - interactive question and answer sessions will develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts. 

Team park challenges - enable students to select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems and interpret mathematical information to reach conclusions within a unique learning environment.

Event details and 2026 speakers at LIVE! events

Dr Matt Pritchard (Keynote Speaker 2nd February only)

Matt is a maths and science magician. As a Curator of Wonder, his amazing performances both inspire and inform. Previously, Matt conducted atomic physics research at Durham University before working at Thinktank Science Museum. In addition to this experience, he has 25 years working as a professional magician and is an Associate of the Inner Magic Circle – one of only 300 people in the world to hold this distinction. 

Matt will focus on the hidden mathematics behind the designs at Disneyland Paris, from clever geometry that deceive the senses to maximum the flow of visitors through the park. His presentation will highlight some creative applications of the maths students learn in the classroom and how maths reasoning finds its way to the strangest (and spookiest) places! He will show that maths is more than just a career that deals with numbers, but a skill that can be used everywhere.

Alison Kiddle

After graduating from the University of Cambridge in 2003, Alison has had a wide ranging career in mathematics and education, as a teacher, author, resource developer and public speaker. When not doing maths, Alison enjoys quizzes, knitting, nature walks and watching football.

How can we use probability to make sense of the world around us and decide which risks are worth taking? In this session, Alison will share with your students how maths can help us make informed decisions, keep us safer, and even find our fortunes!

Bobby Seagull (2nd March only)

Bobby Seagull is a maths teacher, author, TV broadcaster and vocal advocate for numeracy. After rising to fame from BBC quiz show University Challenge, Bobby started a broadcasting career hosting BBC road trip show Monkman & Seagull's Genius Guides, He balances a reality TV career with teaching (taking part in Netflix dating show Indian Matchmaking and winning C4 Celebrity Hunted). He is a regular on daytime TV and has published The Life-Changing Magic of Numbers.

 

Jon Chase - Facilitator (2nd February only)

Jon Chase is a science communicator, author and science rapper currently posted at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He has an intense passion for scientific thinking and believes that knowledge should be made available in a way that allows as many people as possible the opportunity to gain access to it. 

He has presented science for BBC learning on TV and YouTube and also co-authored books on The Science of Star Wars and The Science of Jurassic World. In 2017 he was awarded the Josh Award in Science Communication but is most well known for his science raps, which he has produced for various learning establishments and organisations including NASA, BBC, CH4 and Chester Zoo.

Q&A Session

Our lively and interactive question and answer session gives the students control to ask the questions they want answers to. All the speakers take to the stage to answer questions to provide different perspectives and to offer invaluable career advice from their own experience.

Workbook and Park Challenges

Matt is a TEDx speaker, Fellow of the Professional Speaking Association, runner up in the 'Illusion of the Year Contest' 2020, and an inadvertent TikTok sensation.

 

Ayliean MacDonald

Ayliean is a mathematician, artist, and activist. Whether it's painting mathematical murals in New York, or hiding mathematical badges around the place, she is determined to show people the beauty of maths. She is currently running a long term project to say the largest prime number we know out loud – it’s only 41 million digits long!
