Berlin Psychology & Sociology School Trips & Tours

Most people associate Berlin with the events of World War II, with having the largest Jewish community in Germany, as a seat of Nazi power, and with the Berlin Wall imposing a Communist regime.

The capital city of Germany is identified in most people’s minds with events of World War II, as home to the largest Jewish community in Germany and seat of Nazi power. The year 2013 marked the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s rise to power. However, arguably, more recent events have a greater effect on what you see of the city today – the effects of the Berlin Wall which divided the city for 28 years imposing a Communist regime on the residents.

Expert's comment

“Being in Berlin raises many questions in one’s mind, such as how a small group came to dominate a whole population. Such questions relate, firstly, to the Nazi era when Berlin was the location of the SS headquarters and the focal point of the National Socialist Movement. The questions also relate to the Communist era when a foreign government changed and suppressed the culture of Eastern Germany. The recent history of Berlin is still clearly evident and it is impossible to walk through the city without being continually made aware of its recent past.”
