Geography Visits

Bridestones Moor

This nature reserve is home to typical moorland vegetation, and an ancient woodland estimated to date from the end of the last Ice Age. Experience the wild, natural, untouched landscape, consider the impact of humanity in the past, present and future, and develop children’s sense of responsibility towards our natural resources.

Robin Hood’s Bay

An ideal and popular destination for group visits, where pupils can enjoy searching the rocky shore for current and Jurassic habitats. There is a wide range of wildlife on show, an exciting exhibition and education centre and pupils can even find and classify a fossil.

History Visits

Scarborough Castle

Scarborough Castle has a 2,500 year history, stunning location and panoramic views over the dramatic Yorkshire coastline. It started life as an Iron Age Fort, was occupied by the Romans, became a Viking settlement and reached its heyday under Henry II. This royal stronghold, built by successive medieval kings over two centuries, has seen more than its fair share of conflict and sieges. Learn how it was fought over in the English Civil War and came under bombardment during WWI.

Captain Cook Themed Visits

Explore Captain Cook country in the Captain Cook Memorial Museum and the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum. Here, the story of one of the world’s greatest navigators and mariners can be discovered. Pupils can collect information about the different cultures he encountered, view ship replicas, visit themed display galleries and temporary exhibitions, and use the interactive resources. These visits offer a lively education programme for young children.

Whitby Abbey

Discover how over 1,500 years of history make this abbey one of England’s most important archaeological sites. You’ll find out what life was like through different ages, explore the modern day issues of restoring a ruined property and learn about the troubled history of the Abbey.

A Day in York

Scarborough is an ideal base from which to travel to York as accommodation is cheaper and York is only an hour’s drive away. In York, your pupils could visit the Jorvik Viking Centre, DIG, York Minster & Educational Centre or York Castle Museum. See pages 24-25 for more information.

Science Visits

Sealife Centre

Experience the underwater world first-hand. Learn about marine habitats in the North Sea, and focus on the plight of the seals. Get hands-on with marine animals, see a wide variety of sea animals from all around the world and collect information about the North Sea environment.

Playdale Farm Park

Get close to animals and consider the issues facing 21st century farming at Playdale Farm Park. Pupils will get to interact with a wide range of animals, both farmed and wild, look at how the Farm Park was created and has been developed, and use the educational pack to create their development.
