Key Visits

St Sofia

Once the greatest church in Christendom, this stunning building was built by the Byzantine Empire to impress the world. The religious focal point of the Eastern Orthodox church for nearly 1000 years, the church is now a museum containing a large collection of holy relics and many priceless icons.

Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)

The six minarets and cascading domes dominate the skyline of the Hippodrome. The national mosque of Turkey, it was built between 1609 and 1616 and comprises a tomb of the founder, a madrasah and a hospice.

Kariye Museum

Originally built in the 4th century, the former church of St Saviour in Chora is now one of the world’s greatest monuments to Byzantine art.

The Neve Shalom Synagogue

Built in 1951 and the scene of a tragic terrorist attack in 1986, it is the largest synagogue in Istanbul where most of the religious ceremonies are held. Open to the public for morning visits during weekdays.

Topkapi Palace Museum

Your group can explore the three museums, housing a magnificent collection of archaeological discoveries from the region and historic artefacts from ancient Middle Eastern civilisations.

Grand Covered Bazaar

Students can explore the labyrinth of over 4000 shops and haggle for goods including jewellery, ceramics and leather. The bazaar has been a trading centre for over 500 years and gives an insight into life in Istanbul.

Boat Tour along Bosphorous Waterway

Take a cruise down the narrow strait of water that separates the European side of Istanbul from the Asian side. Students can compare the differences in architecture on both sides and view the mosques, churches and synagogues on the Asian banks of the Strait.

Spice Bazaar

As soon as your group enters the building, they will be hit by the mingled aromas of ginger, pepper, cinnamon and many other spices. Students can explore the 88 shops, many selling spices, herbs, dried fruit, teas, Turkish delight and souvenirs.

More Visits and activities:
Turkish Folk Dance Show

A unique opportunity for students to experience the history and traditions of Turkish singing and dancing.

Whirling Dervishes Performances

Whirling Dervishes are members of a very special sect of Islam who believe that dancing by turning around will integrate themselves with the holy guide whilst mystical music is played by the traditional dram and flote. Performances, in traditional dress, will give students an insight into this ancient tradition which originated in central Turkey.
