British Board of Film Classification
Who decides whether a film gets an ‘18’ or a ‘U’ rating? This question and many more will be answered at the BBFC’s seminar ‘Can You Cut It?’, where students will meet the people who decide the ratings of thousands of films, DVDs and games. The seminar aims to provide an overview of the BBFC’s history and function, followed by an interactive segment using film clips which gives students the chance to debate and discuss how and why films are classified.
London Film Academy
Our three hour and full-day programmes offer a wide selection of practical film-making topics. Recommended sessions cover the key areas of cinematography and storyboarding, but other options are available and your choice will be pitched according to your group’s requirements to ensure they get the most out of their day.
BBC TV Centre Tour
This TV centre tour is due to close in 2012/13 so make sure you sneak this visit in while you can. Take your group on a behind-the-scenes tour of the UK’s most famous TV centre, and see the news centre, production galleries, and studios. A great opportunity to see a working studio environment. Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides an amazing new opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter™ films - the most successful film series of all time. BFI Imax Private Screening
At the BFI’s IMAX theatre in London, you could watch a popular recent release or enjoy a private morning viewing designed for school groups. Choose your film from the extensive library, and take advantage of the student activity packs and supporting teacher information!
Guardian Newsroom Workshops (4 Hours)
Learn about the history of the Guardian newspaper with a workshop that’s designed to complement the National Curriculum and can be tailor-made to suit your particular requirements. Delivered by experienced teachers, workshop topics can include ‘Make a Newspaper’, ‘Editorial Teams’, ‘Podcasting’, ‘Video Editing’, ‘Women and the Vote’ and ‘Civil Rights in the USA in the 1950s and 1960s’.
Careers in the Media (2 Hours)
Students will be given a short presentation outlining routes into a career in the media, with reference to the areas of radio, TV and film. They will work on a simulation exercise where they will be assigned job roles and responsibilities to a set brief. Finally, your group will participate in a Q&A session with a professional actor.
Radio Scripts (2 Hours)
Students will learn how the radio industry works, and then consider audience, content, structure, and impact when editing a radio news bulletin script. This media-based session will conclude with feedback from the tutor on each student’s work.
London Film Museum
The London Film Museum is the only museum of film history and film making in the UK. It has been created with the backing of major studios, distributors and industry professionals and can assist with the teaching of Media & Film Studies, English, ICT, art, design and technology, music and more.
Film Workshops
These workshops are designed to give students the chance to make their own movie amongst the sets, props and costumes at the museum. Film Magic 2 Hours Explore ideas of film magic such as vanishing cuts, strange proportions, green screen special effects, stop motion, and using rare props you will build these into a multi-layered story.
Charlie Chaplin (1 ½ Hours)
Employing aspects of physical theatre and mime, students will make their own silent comedy film, with the soundtrack and sound FX being added later on in the edit.
Sci Fi (1 ½ Hours)
The future has yet to be written in the TARDIS central computer. To prevent a mass zombie holocaust caused by the daleks, workshop participants have to quickly make their future via their movie.
Animation Workshops
These workshops are run by Huw-J who has worked for Dreamworks, Pixar and The Simpsons!
Stereotypes (Drawing – 30 mins, Q&A – 20 mins)
This class uses the concept of stereotyping and observation. This workshop is especially good for younger students.
Storyboarding (Drawing – 40 mins, Q&A – 20 mins)
This class looks at the concept of storyboarding in the movie animation and Games industry and shows how to look at creating basic storyboards including storylines and character emotions.
Art in Action (Drawing 50 mins, Q&A – 20 mins)
This is a longer session but uses aspects of both of the above sessions and also looks at the action aspects of art in movies, animation, games, and comics. It also covers what to look for to create artwork for action sequences.
