Our WWI Literature visits encourage students to look closely at poets’ writing, and the experiences which influenced their words. A few key WWI poets have been highlighted below:
Owen
Probably the most important English War Poet, Owen’s poetry includes Anthem for Doomed Youth, Dulce Et Decorum Est, and Futility. KEY SITES - SANCTUARY WOOD, NEWFOUNDLAND PARK AND ARRAS.
Sassoon
A key figure in Great War poetry, Sassoon’s works include Prelude: The Troops, At Carnoy, and Does it Matter? KEY SITES - MENIN GATE, FRICOURT, MAMETZ AND DANZIG ALLEY CEMETERY AND ARRAS.
Rosenberg
The least privileged of the British War Poets, Rosenberg penned poems such as Break of Day, In the Trenches, and Returning. KEY SITES - SANCTUARY WOOD, NEWFOUNDLAND PARK AND ARRAS.
Other poets students can study include McCrae, Blunden, and many more. Alongside the war poets, your students will have the chance to understand the experience of the characters in ‘Birdsong’ - a popular recommended text choice, with visits to Hill 60 in Ypres and Ulster Tower on the Somme.

WWI Guided Study Tours
Personalise your tour to the WWI Battlefields by following in the footsteps of your local battalion or visit the grave of a relative. By taking a guided study tour with NST, you can discuss this option in advance enabling your Guide Lecturer to build this into your itinerary. If you are looking for something different…
- Our Guide Lecturers’ knowledge of the WWI Battlefi eld areas is endless. We can take you off the beaten track to discover lesser known sites which will enable you to cover a wider perspective of WWI. Fewer people may be at these sites, offering you more space in situ for teaching and discussion.
- Our Guide Lecturers can cover topics which are lesser studied but still of great value and interest, such as the early stages of WWI or 1918.
- Empire History - Our guides will be happy to suggest amendments to your itinerary, either in terms of sites visited or themes studied, in order to make the tour as relevant as possible for schools studying British Imperial History.
