Key Visits
Guided Panoramic Introductory Tour
Many groups take this on their first day in the city, a fabulous way to see the architecture of the city’s most famous buildings including: Cathedral of St Saviour, Red Square, St Basil’s Cathedral, the GUM shopping complex and the Kremlin.
The Kremlin
A name synonymous with Russian government in the modern period and the seat of power since 1918. It still fulfils that function today so that two thirds of the Kremlin is not accessible to tourists. This still leaves a huge amount to visit in this massive complex, from which many of the government buildings can be seen. Highlights include the Armoury Palace, the various cathedrals and the Tsar’s Bell and Cannon.
Museum of Modern History
Formerly the Museum of the Revolution and housed in the former English Club the museum now covers many aspects of Russian history in the 20th century although many of its most striking artefacts and displays still relate to the 1905 and 1917 revolutions.
Cathedral of Christ the Saviour
Built in the 1990s to replace the church destroyed by Stalin in 1933, the great dome of this building is one of the most striking features of the Moscow skyline. Seen by many Russians as an act of atonement for the crimes of the Soviet period, the building is a fascinating monument to the changes that have swept the country since 1991.
Lenin’s Mausoleum
One of the most venerated sites within the old Soviet Union, Lenin’s embalmed body has been on display here since 1930. The podium of the building is equally famous as the spot from which members of the Politbureau watched parades pass through Red Square.
Stalin’s Bunker
This fascinating complex served as underground headquarters during WWII. Students can explore the whole underground town and see the original items used by Stalin and his staff.
Victory Park and the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War
A vast sprawling complex that is both a monument to the Soviet era and a measure of the impact of World War II on Russian society. The museum within the park has a vast display interpreting the war from the Russian perspective, including huge dioramas of battles such as Moscow, Stalingrad and Kursk.
