History school trips to St Petersburg: 20th Century Russia
The grandeur of St Petersburg gives a vivid insight into Russian society on the eve of revolution and its canal, squares and buildings were the backdrop against which the events of the revolutions of 1905 and 1917 were played out. This least Russian of all Russian cities is nonetheless among the most fascinating to the historian and the most beautiful to all visitors.

Key Visits
Guided Panoramic Introductory Tour
Many groups take this on their first day in the city, a fabulous way to see the architecture of the city’s most famous buildings including: St Isaac’s Cathedral, The Mariinsky Theatre, the Cruiser Aurora, Nevsky Prospekt & the Church of the Saviour of the Spilt Blood.
Cruiser Aurora
Legendary for firing the blank round at The Winter Palace on the evening of October 25th, this has been a state monument since 1948 and now houses a museum.
Hermitage Museum & Winter Palace
Originally built as two separate structures, they have effectively functioned as one complex since the 1920s. The art collection is wonderful and huge (over 3 million objects) and a visit to the museum allows you to visit the state rooms used by royal family.
Museum of the Defence & Siege of Leningrad
A small but moving museum opened in 1989 and replacing one destroyed at Stalin’s orders in the post war purges. It tells the story of the 900 day siege and is in part a memorial to the 700,000 civilian dead.
Peter and Paul Fortress
Visits within the complex include the City History Museum, the Peter and Paul Cathedral where all the Tsars from Peter the Great to Nicholas II are buried and the cells of nineteenth century political prisoners in the Trubetsky Bastion.
The Yusupov Palace on the Moyka
Famous as the scene of the murder of Rasputin by Count Yusupov, its sumptuous rooms give a vivid insight into the lifestyles of the aristocracy prior to the Revolution.
The Museum of Political History
Situated in an attractive art nouveau mansion, the building was seized by the Bolsheviks and used as their headquarters in 1917. Formerly The Museum of the Revolution, the collection was renamed and reinterpreted in the mid 1990s and now covers the period from Catherine the Great to the present day.
Church of the Saviour of the Spilt Blood
Built on the spot where Alexander II was assassinated in 1881, this Russian Revival style church is one of the city’s most striking landmarks.
Optional visits and activities include:
- Folklore show
- Traditional Russian Picnic
- Kolomenskow Wedding
- Ice Hockey match
- Ice skating
