Our most popular visits in the Bay of Naples for Geography school trips

Here are some of our most popular visits in the Bay of Naples for Geography groups. We can tailor-make an itinerary to your exact needs. Call 0845 688 8988 to create your itinerary from scratch today.

Mount Vesuvius

Nowhere in the world can the effects of a volcanic eruption be better understood. You will be driven most of the way up the mount then take a 30-minute guided walk to the rim. Your group will study the most densely populated volcano in the world. Complete NST’s dedicated activity sheets to consider its formation, eruptive history, anatomy and human management issues, and even read eye witness accounts of the 79AD eruption! Guided option available.

The Vesuvius Observatory

The Vesuvius Observatory is a surveillance centre that monitors and carries out research in various fields of geophysics, geochemistry and volcanology. Expert guides will take students on an interactive educational tour, demonstrate geophysics instruments and the rock collection from Vesuvius’ most recent eruptions, and finishes with real time observation of seismic and geochemical data. It is also possible to look through the camera’s eye deep into the craters of Vesuvius, Etna, Vulcano and Stromboli.

Pompeii

Observe the destructive impact of the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD which buried, and consequently preserved these famous towns. Take in the original streets, houses, preserved human casts, and works of art on display. NST activity sheets provide resources for a honey pot analysis and the opportunity to measure the impact of tourism on the site. We recommend a 2-hour guided tour option. Guided option available.

Herculaneum

On a smaller scale than Pompeii, but better preserved in the same Vesuvius eruption of August 79AD, this visit is often preferred by many students. Your activity sheets from Pompeii can also be used here. Guided option available.

Olive & Lemon Farm & Mill

Take a guided walking tour of this olive and lemon farm & working mill in Sorrento. Your group will also enjoy a cheese-making demonstration, plus a complimentary pizza and soft drink. Your coach transport will also be included.

Phlegraean Fields

Earthquakes and fumaroles bear testimony to continuing tectonic activity in this area. Visit the ash-filled crater of Solfatara, experience jets of steam charged with sulphurous fumes, bubbling hot mud, and crystallised rock formations. Transfer to Pozzuoli, an area that has experienced dramatic earthquake activity and tectonic uplift, and finally climb the volcanic cone, Monte Nuovo, formed in a single week. Alternatively, visit Naples Archaeological Museum. Guided option available.

The Island of Capri

This stunning rocky coastline features the Arco Naturale and Faraglione landforms, shaped over many years by the erosive power of the sea. Resource pack activities include photograph and diagram annotation, field sketching and sequencing. The coastline is accessed via a short ferry ride. A laser boat ride around the island is also available upon arrival to see the coastline formations, and a funicular railway can be taken for a five minute journey up to Capri centre. Guided option available.

Full day guided package
We can also arrange a full day guided package to Capri and Ana Capri for your group. This will include an English speaking guide, your return hydrofoil crossing from and to Sorrento harbour, private mini-bus transport to Ana Capri and back to Capri centre, a walking tour to the Gardens of Augustus, and a funicular railway ride. Ask us about this great full day package.

Cerio Centre (Capri)

For more than 50 years Ignazio Cerio collected shells, fossils, rocks, plants and archaeological finds coming from Capri and from other parts of the world, encouraging scientific studies. Composed of four rooms, the geo-palaeontological room bears most relevance to geologists and allows students to understand Capri's origin and present morphology as well as the fossils which can be found in its rocks. Another room is home to several animal, marine and terrestrial organisms coming from the isle of Capri.

Amalfi Coast

On the southern side of the Sorrento peninsula lies the famous Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where a ribbon of road clings tightly to steep, rugged cliffs interspersed with picturesque towns. With opportunities to study coastal landforms and tourism impact, this is a memorable drive en-route to the Vannullo Farm & Dairy that groups thoroughly enjoy.

Vannullo Farm & Dairy

Renowned for its outstanding buffalo mozzarella, this farm and dairy is a fantastic visit to deliver a case study on Industry. Your guided tour will provide an insight into all aspects of production and an opportunity to taste the outstanding produce. A great visit after a drive down the Amalfi Coast.

Naples Underground Tour and Museum

There is an entire underground city below Naples - a series of ancient aqueducts that were eventually shut down and used as a bomb shelter during World War II. You can go down a square flight of steps put in place by Mussolini leading down 40m into an actual air raid shelter. The museum is in a huge underground sandstone quarry and contains incredible artifacts and objects found during more than 50 years of exploring the labyrinth beneath Naples.

Citta’ della Scienza & Planetarium

City of Science is one of the most interesting scientific museums as it integrates science, art, culture and innovation in a single location. Packed with interactive and multimedia exhibitions, games and scientific and technological curiosities, your group’s journey in time will start at the ‘Science Gym’ and goes on to the adventures of evolution. The ‘Planetarium’, one of the most innovative in Italy, guides the visitor in a voyage of discovery of the stars, the planets and the galaxies.

Evening Activities

Most of our hotels are happy for groups to make use of their facilities for evening discussions or quizzes. The Sorrento bowling alley and the Tarantella Show are group favourites, and you can even hold your own disco afterwards too!

Below, you'll find some of our most popular accommodation options for school groups.
