Key Visits
Pompeii
The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD buried this town under a deep mantle of pebbles, mud and ash. Only in the last two centuries have excavations been conducted with finds being conserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples and in the museum on the site.
Vesuvius
This is the only active volcano on the mainland of Europe, at present dormant after the last disastrous eruption of 1944 when streams of lava poured down its sides and showered Naples and surrounding towns with pebbles and ash. Take a walk to the rim of this magnificent crater.
Herculaneum
Better preserved than Pompeii, its smaller scale is more impactful and preferred by many students. Some of the houses still have their wooden shutters, upper storeys and metal grilles over the windows making it visually ideal for studying ‘City Life in Roman Italy’.
Capri
Students can explore the island of Capri and its highlights including the Palace of Tiberius, a must visit for Classical fanatics. Groups access the island by ferry or hydrofoil, which NST can arrange to be pre-booked and pre-paid.
