Key Educational Visits in St Petersburg
The grandeur of St Petersburg gives a vivid insight into Russian society on the eve of revolution and its canal, squares and buildings were the backdrop against which the events of the revolutions of 1905 and 1917 were played out.
Guided Panoramic Introductory Tour
A popular first day activity and a fabulous way to see the architecture of the city’s famous buildings including St Isaac’s Cathedral, The Mariinsky Theatre, the Cruiser Aurora, Nevsky Prospekt and the Church of the Saviour of the Spilt Blood.
Cruiser Aurora
Legendary for firing the blank round at The Winter Palace on the evening of October 25th this has been a state monument since 1948 and now houses a museum.
Hermitage Museum & Winter Palace
Originally built as two separate structures, they have effectively functioned as one complex since the 1920s. The art collection is huge (over 3 million objects) and a visit to the museum allows you to visit the state rooms used by royal family.
Peter & Paul Fortress
Visits within the complex include the City History Museum, the Peter and Paul Cathedral where all the Tsars from Peter the Great to Nicholas II are buried and the cells of 19th century political prisoners in the Trubetsky Bastion.
Church of the Saviour of the Spilt Blood
Built on the spot where Alexander II was assassinated in 1881 this Russian Revival style church is one of the city’s most striking landmarks.
Key Educational Visits in Moscow
Moscow contains so much that vividly evokes the society and politics of the Soviet era from the earliest days of the Bolshevik government, through Lenin’s death, the traumas of the Purges and The Great Patriotic War, the Cold War to the collapse of communism and its aftermath – all may be studied in depth.
Guided Panoramic Introductory Tour
A fabulous way to see the architecture of the city’s most famous buildings including: Cathedral of St Saviour, Red Square, St Basil’s Cathedral, the GUM shopping complex and the Kremlin.
The Kremlin
A name synonymous with Russian government in the modern period and the seat of power since 1918. It still fulfils that function today so two thirds of the Kremlin is not accessible to tourists. This still leaves a huge amount to visit in this massive complex, from which many of the government buildings can be seen. Highlights include the Armoury Palace, the various cathedrals and the Tsar’s Bell and Cannon.
Museum of Modern History
Formerly the Museum of the Revolution and housed in the former English Club the museum now covers many aspects of Russian history in the 20th century although many of its most striking artefacts and displays still relate to the 1905 and 1917 revolutions.
Cathedral of Christ the Saviour
Built in the 1990s to replace the church destroyed by Stalin in 1933 the great dome of this building is one of the most striking features of the Moscow skyline. Seen by many Russians as an act of atonement for the crimes of the Soviet period, the building is a fascinating monument.
Lenin’s Mausoleum
One of the most venerated sites within the old Soviet Union, Lenin’s embalmed body has been on display here since 1930. The podium of the building is equally famous as the spot from which members of the Politbureau watched parades pass through Red Square.
Stalin’s Bunker
This fascinating complex served as underground headquarters during WWII. Students can explore the whole underground town and see the original items used by Stalin and his staff.
Victory Park & the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War
A vast sprawling complex that is both a monument to the Soviet era and a measure of the impact of World War II on Russian society. The museum within the park has a vast display interpreting the war from the Russian perspective, including huge dioramas of battles such as Moscow, Stalingrad and Kursk.
