Key Visits
Your group will be accompanied throughout your tour and at each of the following visits.
Istanbul
A remarkable city, full of mystery, charm and learning opportunities. Istanbul forms the start and ending location of your tour. A visit to the Blue Mosque, the Topkapi palace and the bazaars will give students a glimpse of the culture where East meets West. The Church of St Sophia will take students back to the Roman Empire and the great city of Constantine.
Bosphorus Boat Cruise, Istanbul
Enjoy a relaxing boat ride along the Bosphorus, the narrow strait of water that separates Europe from Asia. See sites from the water such as Dolmabahçe Palace, the Maiden’s Tower, the Fortress of Europe, and the Fortress of Asia.
Gallipoli
Many groups spend time en route from Istanbul to Troy exploring Gallipoli and the landing beaches and trenches of the Allied assault of 1915. Gallipoli derives its name from the Greek Kallipolis meaning “Beautiful City.”
Troy
Students who have read the Iliad can imagine watching the armies of Greece and Troy on the plain below as they stand where Helen stood on the battlements. See Schliemann’s excavation scars on the landscape and puzzle over the periods of settlement that have been revealed. Our groups combine Troy with a visit to Pergamum en route to Kusadasi from Gallipoli.
Pergamum
A spectacular hilltop site with impressive ruins, and an ideal visit en route to Kusadasi. The reconstruction of the temple of Trajan shows the importance of the Imperial cult. In addition, the Sanctuary of Asklepios has intriguing remains of the healing complex as well as a theatre to explore.
Kusadasi
An attractive city base for groups after a short stay in Istanbul, ideal for visiting Ephesus, Aphrodisias and other famous sites. There are many fascinating less well-known ancient cities also within easy reach, such as Nysa and Magnesia.
Ephesus
A graphic illustration of the power of Rome and the wealth of Asia Minor – all its public buildings were made of marble and even its streets were paved with it. Examine the amazing detail of the Library of Celsus and see the site of The Temple of Artemis, one of the original Seven Wonders of the World.
Aphrodisias
Visit the famous Temple of Aphrodite, who the city was named after, which formed the centre of the city and the huge stadium, used during the Roman period for athletic competitions and festivals. Other highlights include the excavated theatre, a magnificent gateway, a huge Roman agora, a museum and a beautifully preserved Bouleuterion. An ideal stop en route to Pamukkale from Kusadasi.
Pamukkale
Students can visit the famous hot springs with their brilliant white limestone basins – a world heritage site and one of the most renowned tourist sites in Turkey. The approach road passes through the tombs of ancient Hierapolis with its impressive theatre.
Hierapolis
Hierapolis (‘holy city’) was the ancient city on top of the famous Pamukkale hot springs and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Examine its host of ruins including an impressive theatre with a seating capacity of 15,000. Many groups choose to return to Kusadasi before flying back to Istanbul.
