Key Visits - Bay of Naples
Pompeii
The preserved town of Pompeii has it all - houses, thermopolia, temples, baths, theatres, amphitheatre, palaestra and a forum. A unique chance to study ‘City Life in Roman Italy’ or to spend a day being a real “Roman” exploring the streets of the town buried by Vesuvius’ 79AD eruption.
Herculaneum
Better preserved than Pompeii, its smaller scale is more impactful and preferred by many students. Some of the houses still have their wooden shutters, upper storeys and metal grilles over the windows making it visually ideal for studying ‘City Life in Roman Italy’.
Naples Underground Tour & Museum
There is an entire underground city below Naples - a series of ancient aqueducts that were eventually shut down and used as a bomb shelter during World War II. You can go down a square flight of steps put in place by Mussolini leading down 40m into an actual air raid shelter. The museum is in a huge underground sandstone quarry and contains incredible artefacts and objects found during more than 50 years of exploring the labyrinth beneath Naples.
Vesuvius
After the short walk from the coach park to the rim of this magnificent active crater, your alpine guide will tell your group about the volcano’s most famous eruption while your students admire the incredible view of the region (alpine guide payable locally).
Naples Archaeological Museum
This fascinating museum contains wonderful exhibits including Roman mosaics (the Alexander mosaic and others from the House of the Faun), wall paintings and Greek sculpture (Doryphoros and the Tyrannicides). A valuable additional visit en route to or from the airport.

Key Visits - Rome
The Colosseum
Who can resist a visit to the Colosseum? The world’s largest surviving structure of Roman antiquity with its grandeur, wonders of construction and the horrors of the amphitheatre. Our guide will truly set the scene and leave students in awe.
Palatine Hill
The most central of the Seven Hills of Rome is one of the most ancient parts of the city. See the ruins of the Imperial Palaces and the Hut of Romulus, as well as a great view of the Circus Maximus. Explore the pleasant gardens or see vibrant frescos in the recently opened house of Augustus.
Roman Forum
The oldest and most important structures of the ancient city are located here, including the temple of Saturn and the complex of the Vestal Virgins. Imagine Cicero or Mark Anthony walking to the Senate House or Rostra and picture Pliny in the Centum viral court.
Pantheon
Built as a temple to all the gods and rebuilt circa 126AD during Hadrian’s reign, it’s still in use today. A marvel of Roman engineering and, until the middle of the 20th century, the largest masonry dome built.
Guided Vatican City Tour
Somehow a visit to Rome is not quite complete without a visit to St Peter’s Basilica or the Sistine Chapel. A visit through the Vatican Museums, accompanied by the required local guide, will also provide your group with the chance to see some of the world’s finest examples of Greek sculpture and vase painting.
Ostia Antica
The harbour city of ancient Rome is 20 miles out of the city but is a fascinating visit. Students love to explore the extensive remains of the Roman town and often prefer it to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Combine with a visit to the Catacombs or an evening visit to nearby Time City.
