Key Visits

Arles

The legacy of the Romans is easy to see in this impressive city. There are a wide number of attractions within the city, including an amphitheatre, forum and the Baths of Constantine, which will show students what Roman life was like in the provinces.

Pont du Gard

An outstanding example of Roman architectural and engineering accomplishment. Students will be amazed by the scale of the aqueduct and the on-site interactive museum features a wide range of exhibits for your group to explore.

Nîmes

A delightful city, rich in Roman history. It’s home to a well preserved and elegant temple, La Maison Carrée, the fountain gardens containing the Temple of Diana and the Tour Magne, and the Castellum and Arena.

Orange

The town is renowned for its Roman architecture; the Roman Theatre is described by many as the finest still existing in Europe, mainly due to its magnificent stage wall. The theatre, its surroundings and Monumental Arch of Orange, are all UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Vaison-la-Romaine

The Roman ruins and the modern town are on the banks of the river Ouvèze which is crossed by an ancient 1st century bridge. Archaeological digs have revealed the luxurious and elaborate riverside villas, numerous geometric mosaic pavements and a fine small theatre. Groups can also explore the medieval village and its cathedral on the other side of the river.

Palais de Papes, Avignon

Visit one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. It was the Papal residence for the majority of the 14th century and the artwork in the chapels is spectacular.

Glanum

A 1st century BC Romanised settlement, Glanum, has an impressive triumphal arch, the oldest to be found in Gaul, it portrays Gaulish captives being led away in chains by the victorious Romans. Located near the arch is a virtually intact cenotaph, the Cenotaph of the Julii, one of the best preserved to be found anywhere in the Roman world.

Les Baux-de-Provence

Visit this village’s mountainside location; its defendable position gave rise to early habitation, with traces of life from as far back as 6000BC. In summer, the nearby Château des Beaux gives a demonstration of huge catapults in action.
