Galleries & Museums
Museu d'Art Contemporani (MACBA)
"A glittering white home for late 20th Century art".
Gallery Focus: Rotates a selection of work from 1920s-1980s. Includes works by Brossa, Tápies, Ponç and Guixant, who produced early experiments in abstraction and mixed media.
Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya
"One of the world’s leading collections of modern art, from 1850 to the present".
Gallery Focus: This eclectic structure created for fine arts goes back to the 19th century. This is a collection of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance art. Also houses a separate 19th-20th century art and photography section.
Museu Picasso
"A tribute to perhaps the greatest painter of modern times".
Gallery Focus: Picasso’s experiments with Impressionism, Pointillism and Symbolism are shown here in his unrivalled early works. Picasso’s personal style can be noted from the Blue to Pink Period (1901-1917) and a gradual move into more experimental cubism and abstract forms.
Fundación Joan Miró
"A white-walled temple to the art of Joan Miró, the most Catalan of all artists".
Gallery Focus: The Miró Foundation houses donated work, including tapestries which contain elements of textile, paint and collage by Miró. Also displayed are leading 20th century artists, such as Duchamp and Rauschenberg, perfect for the study of form, colour and texture.
Gaudí - Sagrada Família
"A world renowned emblem of the city".
Gallery Focus: Based on Gaudí’s plans of 1954, this stunning building is still under construction and due to be finished in 2026. You can walk up the spiral steps to see the openwork spires whilst at the same time stone snakes, lizards and frogs pop out from the architecture.
Gaudí - Parc Güell, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera (Casa Milà)
"Beautiful examples of Antonio Gaudí’s extraordinary design".
Gallery Focus: A magnificent fusion of architecture and natural forms, with benches shaped like dragons, a gatehouse topped with fly agaric mushrooms and Casa Batlló’s melting façade, resembling skulls, masks and sharks teeth - a must for anyone studying 3D.
Up & Coming Galleries & Exhibitions
Museum of World Cultures
Barcelona is widening its range of museums and the latest offer is the Museum of World Cultures, which will open in June 2014. Visitors will discover the world through about 700 pieces of art from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania. This is the first time that non-western art from the four continents will be displayed in the same museum, and the first time that Barcelona has had artworks from Africa and Asia in a permanent exhibition.
Joan Colom Exhibition
November 2013, Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya
This exhaustive exhibition will review the complete works of one of the key figures of 20th-century photography. It will present a detailed study of Joan Colom’s archives, the chief subject matter of which is street life. His work combines scenes from down and out neighbourhoods with modern reportage. On show will be the photographs taken between 1958 and 1961, when Colom regularly ventured into Barcelona's red-light district, furtively recording the curious characters roaming there. Also on display will be reportages he made in the Somorrostro and Born neighbourhoods and the ones of bullfighting. Please note, this exhibition is perhaps best suited to older students.
The Dalí Trail
Your students will love NST’s Dalí Trail. They will visit Figueres, Portlligat and Pubol, view some of Dalí’s greatest works, and experience the environment in which he lived.
Theatre Museum in Figueres
This museum contains the broadest range of work from Salvador Dalí’s career. The building of the museum is as surreal as the exhibits within. One room even turns into Mae West’s face when viewed from a small stage.
Dalí’s House in Portlligat
Gala and Dalí structured this house in the form of a labyrinth and decorated it over a forty-year period from 1930 to 1970.
Gala Dalí Castle in Pubol
In the residence of the painter’s wife, your group will view the paintings and drawings that Dalí gave to Gala as gifts, as well as the elephants he gave her with which to adorn the garden.

Hotel Roma Reial & ComercioThis simple hotel offers functional accommodation. The building itself has a great deal of character and the hotel is well-managed. There is a sister establishment, the Hotel Comercio, which is located approximately 100 metres around the corner, and this hotel is also used to accommodate groups.

Hotel Roma Reial & Comercio
A very busy, city centre hotel which accommodates student parties from all over Europe. Here you’ll find good, budget accommodation in a lively, central location which very good value for money. We think it is best suited to older, self-sufficient school groups and students.
Location Information
Hotel Roma Reial is located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, in the Plaça Reial and only a 1 minute walk from the Ramblas. A weekly flea market is held here on Sundays. Transfer coaches stop at the bottom of the Ramblas to unload luggage and from here groups make the remainder of the journey to the hotel on foot (which equates roughly to a 10 minute walk). The nearest metro stop is ‘Liceu’ on the green line. The presence of working girls around city centre hotels has been reported by previous group leaders. For this reason, we suggest the hotel is not suitable for younger school parties. As in other busy European capitals, care should be taken with bags, wallets and other personal possessions.
