Students can learn how Warsaw has literally risen like a phoenix from the ashes of WWII into the lively and cosmopolitan city it is today.

When visiting Poland’s capital city students can see the largest Jewish ghetto established by Nazi Germany, the scene of the Ghetto Uprising of 1943 and learn about the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Students can also learn about post-war Poland; the period under Soviet control, the collapse of Communism and the rise of Solidarity through to life in modern day Warsaw.

Warsaw

4 day Guided Tour

Day 1

Flight to Warsaw. On arrival you will be met by your guide/lecturer for the coach transfer to your accommodation for check-in. Introductory walking tour of the historic Old Town to include the Old Town Square, Cathedral, the Royal Palace, the monument to the little Insurgent and the Uprising Memorial. Emphasis on the tour will be placed on the wartime destruction and the task of rebuilding the historic core of the city in the post war period. Evening talk on Poland in WWII: The fall of Poland and the Occupation, the Holocaust and the fate of Poland’s Jewish population, the Ghetto Uprising of 1943, the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, the destruction of the city and Poland and the post war settlement

Day 2

Morning visit to the Uprising Museum. After lunch your group will take a walking tour in the city centre to include Novy Swiat, the Radziwill Palace, where the Warsaw Pact was signed, the Memorial to Jozef Pilsudski, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Saxon Gardens, as well as the main commercial district along Marszalkowska. The tour will finish with a visit to the Palace of Culture.

Day 3

Morning walking tour of the former ghetto and visit to the notorious Pawiak Prison, including the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes, the Bunker Monument and the Umschlagplatz Monument. In the afternoon continue with a visit to the Jewish Historical Institute and Ulica Bohaterow Ghetta, with its poignant reminders of the vanished community. Whilst there, your group will visit the Monte Casino Memorial. Continue by coach to visit the Jewish cemetery at Powazki to see the section of the Ghetto wall and the memorial to Janusz Korczak. Time allowing, visit the main Catholic cemetery.

Day 4 

Return Travel: Dependent on flight times, free morning for shopping or independent sightseeing before the airport transfer for the return flight to the UK.
