Mexico (including Mexico City, Cuernavaca & Taxco)

Day 1: Travel to Mexico City

Flight to Mexico City. Transfer with your guide to your hotel. Evening meal (first included meal). Overnight: Mexico City.

Day 2: Mexico City

Full day tour of the city. Visit the National Palace built above old Aztec ruins with magnificent murals from Diego Rivera depicting the history of Mexico, the historic district and Metropolitan Cathedral. The Aztec Temples (Templo Mayor) contain many artefacts of great significance and a model displaying the grandeur of Tenochtitlan, the ancient Aztec capital. Overnight: Mexico City.

Day 3: Mexico City – Xochimilco – Teotihuacan

Travel south to the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco. Experience a tour by boat, surrounded by other boats gliding by with flowers and handicrafts to sell. This cruise over the lakes and canals sails over the original foundations of Mexico City and is great fun. (a good packed lunch is provided for you to eat on the boat ride). Continue to the famous Pyramids of Teotihuacan dating from 100BC. This ancient centre of pyramids, palaces, and broad avenues is outstanding. Your guide will unravel the mystery and mystique of this ancient civilisation. Climb the steps of the Pyramid of the Sun to be rewarded with an excellent view of the entire complex. Final visit to the Shrine of Guadaloupe on the return journey to Mexico City. Overnight: Mexico City.

Day 4: Mexico City – Cuernavaca

Depart Mexico City for Cuernavaca, a delightful colonial city. Take a short tour of the town and wander around the central market. Continue to Cacahuamilpa to visit the extraordinary caves, noted for their stunning rock formations and walk with your local guide over a kilometre into the heart of a mountain. Travel on to the mystical site of the Xochicalco hilltop ruins associated with the Mayan and Zapotec cultures. The local guide will unravel the past of this ancient civilisation where human sacrifice was a way of life. A packed lunch is provided on this day. Continue to Cuernavaca. Overnight: Cuernavaca or Vista Hermosa.

Day 5: Cuernavaca – Taxco

A free morning at leisure before the drive to Taxco, a national monument to the colonial era,  tucked away in the mountains of the Sierra Madre. Wander the cobblestone streets, the tree-lined main square, visit the many shops and daily market offering bark paintings, wooden masks and silver as befits Mexico’s ‘Silver City’. Overnight: Taxco.

Day 6: Taxco – Mexico City

After breakfast, a free morning in Taxco prior to your transfer back to Mexico City airport, with a stop en-route at the market town of Amecameca. The return transfer route also includes views of Mexico’s tallest mountain, an active volcano standing 5,452 metres high. Overnight flight to the UK.

Day 7: Arrival in the UK

Your flights arrives back in the afternoon.
