Budapest

4 days from only £379pp (by air)

Day 1 Budapest

Morning flight to Budapest for arrival at midday. On arrival your NSt Representative will meet you for the coach transfer to your hotel for check-in. Afternoon introductory tour of Buda and Pest on foot and by public transport. You may also wish to take the funicular train up to the Palace in Buda for the first panoramic view of the city. From here, continue to Vasi Utca, famous for its shops and promenade. Return to your hotel for your evening meal (first meal included) and an introductory talk on Budapest and Hungary in the Twentieth Century.

Day 2 Budapest (Buda)

The morning will be spent in Buda exploring the Varhegy (Castle Hill). The whole district was beautifully restored after WWII. Visits will include the Buda Palace (exterior only), the Matthias Church, the medieval Jewish Prayer House, the Fisherman’s Bastion and the Budapest Historical Museum. During the afternoon you will make a visit to Gellert-Hegy. This huge rocky outcrop rises 130 metres above the river, topped by a citadel containing the Liberation Monument and provides a vantage point for a superb view over the city.

Day 3 Budapest (Pest)

A day on foot and using public transport spent exploring the main sites of Pest, to include a half day tour of the old Jewish district. A morning walking tour to take in the Parliament Building (exterior), the memorial to Imre Nagy, the Soviet War Memorial, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and finishing on Andrassy ut, Budapest’s longest and grandest boulevard. Since 2000, Andrassy ut has been the home of the excellent Terrorhaza (Terror House) Museum. The building in which it is housed was used by the Fascist Arrow Cross as a prison and interrogation centre. The afternoon is spent in the old Jewish district visiting Dohany utca Synagogue, Europe’s largest synagogue, part of which houses a Jewish museum, the Holocaust Memorial, the Memorial to the Ghetto wall and the memorials to Raoul Wallenberg and Carl Lutz. Continue on to visit the streets of some of the former Jewish residential districts and the exteriors of several other synagogues.
