As one of the superpowers, the USSR and now Russia has played a major part in 20th Century History.

On your visit students can learn about the end of the Tsars and the rise of the Soviet Union the war against Nazi Germany, how the Soviets formed the Eastern block and the subsequent Cold War and finally the reforms of Glasnost and Perestroika under Mikhail Gorbachev and the breakdown of the USSR.

8 Day Moscow & St Petersburg Inclusive Tour

Day 1 Moscow

Flight to Moscow. Meet your NST representative on arrival and transfer by coach to your hotel for your evening meal (first meal included). Welcome Meeting to discuss your itinerary. Overnight: Moscow.

Day 2 Moscow

Morning panoramic city tour of Moscow to view the famous landmarks. Visit to the recently constructed Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Interior lifts take visitors to the rooftop viewing galleries. Continue to Red Square to view the colourful domes of St Basil’s Cathedral, the black marbled building housing Lenin’s Tomb (interior visit if open) and the famous GUM shopping complex. You will also see exterior views of the Kremlin, the fortress housing the government administrative buildings and golden domed Cathedrals. Afternoon free for independent sightseeing, shopping or an optional excursion. Optional evening show: circus or theatre (ballet, opera or classical music). Overnight: Moscow.

Day 3 Moscow

Morning tour of some of Moscow’s unique metro stations. Each one was constructed by a different
designer using bronze, crystal and mosaic to illustrate the history and development of the USSR. Continue with a visit to Old Arbat Street, one of Moscow’s most well known shopping areas for some free time and lunch. Continue in the afternoon with a visit to the Contemporary Russian History Museum which reflects the uneasy transformation to modern day Russia. Optional evening activity: ten-pin bowling or sports event (basketball, ice hockey or football). Overnight: Moscow.

Day 4 Moscow, overnight rail travel

Morning visit to the walled Kremlin Grounds, a city within a city and the seat of power since 1156. View the Tsar’s Bell and the Cannon and enter the Church of the Assumption, one of several Kremlin Cathedrals. Recommended optional visit to the Armoury Museum, housing many Royal artefacts and Russian treasures, including the famous Faberge egg collection. Afternoon visit to Victory Park (Park Pobedy) dominated by its obelisk and museum. Optional evening show: circus or theatre (ballet, opera or classical music). Evening transfer to the railway station. Overnight: sleeper train to St Petersburg accompanied by an NST escort.

Day 5 St Petersburg

Arrive St Petersburg station to be met by your NST city representative for the accompanied transfer to your hotel for breakfast. Full day tour commencing with a visit to Hare Island and the Peter and Paul Fortress. Within its walls you will visit the former prison and the Cathedral of Peter and Paul, the burial place of the Russian Tsars, including the remains of the last Romanovs. Continue to the Museum of the History of Leningrad, which commemorates the 900 day siege of the city 1941-44. Overnight: St Petersburg. Optional evening show: folklore/jazz club/theatre (ballet, opera or classical music). Overnight: St Petersburg.

Day 6 St Petersburg

Half day panoramic tour to include views of the most famous landmarks, including St Isaac’s Cathedral (optional interior visit), the Mariinsky Theatre and the Cruiser Aurora (brief on board visit if available) and Peter the Great’s Log Cabin. Continue to Nevsky Prospekt, the main street of the city, where you can also view the Church of the Saviour on the Spilt Blood, built on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881, and browse through the souvenir market nearby. Afternoon free for independent sightseeing, shopping or a highly recommended optional excursion out of the city to visit Pushkin Palace and Pavlosk Palace Gardens. Optional evening activity: ten-pin bowling, ice-skating or sports event (basketball, ice hockey or football). Overnight: St Petersburg.

Day 7 St Petersburg

Morning visit to the Hermitage Museum, one of the world’s largest art collections, housed within the impressive Winter Palace. Afternoon free for independent sightseeing, shopping or an optional excursion. Optional evening show: folklore/jazz club/theatre (ballet, opera or classical music). Overnight: St Petersburg.

Day 8 St Petersburg

Breakfast (last meal included). Dependent on flight timings, free time for sightseeing/shopping with use of your coach, prior to the transfer to St Petersburg airport for the return flight to the UK.
