Russia

As one of the superpowers, the USSR and now Russia has played a major part in 20th Century History.

A visit to either or both of the two very different cities featured here offers a fascinating insight into this huge, comlex and rapidly changing country. All aspects of Russian history from the Tsuarist period to the present may be studied through a profusion of sites, monuments and excellent museums but it is the country itself that will be the highlight - so familiar in many ways and yet so alien in others. Indeed it is arguably difficult to gain a full understanding of Russia's past and certainly of the scale of change that has swept through politics, society and economy here over the last 20 years without having seen the country at first hand.
