Day 1: Istanbul Flight to Istanbul. Your guide, who will accompany you throughout your stay in Turkey, will meet you at the airport. Accompanied coach transfer to your hotel in Istanbul. Evening meal (first included meal). Overnight: Istanbul. Day 2: Gallipoli and Canakkale Depart after breakfast for the journey west, to take the ferry across the Dardanelles to the pleasant coastal town of Canakkale. Visit en route to Gallipoli, to view the steep cliffs, landing beaches, trenches and cemeteries of the Allied assault of 1915. Continue south and cross the Dardanelles. Overnight: Canakkale. Day 3: Troy, Pergamum and Kusadasi Depart after breakfast and continue the journey south to Kusadasi, with two visits en route. Firstly, visit Troy, where excavations have revealed many different periods of settlement and a rebuilt Wooden Horse recalls the best known event of the Trojan war. Continue to Pergamum, one of Turkey’s finest archaeological sites with its library, gymnasium, altar to Zeus, theatre and ancient health centre. Arrive Kusadasi in time for evening meal. Overnight: Kusadasi. Day 4: Ephesus A full day excursion to one of the greatest ancient cities, Ephesus, which was in its time the Roman capital of Asia. The remains of Ephesus bring history to life; the Great Theatre could seat 25,000 and was reputedly the location from which St Paul addressed the citizens; the Arcadian way advances grandly from the Theatre to the former port and the remains of the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the world, can also be seen. Overnight: Kusadasi. Day 5: Pamukkale and Hieropolis Full day excursion to Pamukkale, with a visit en route to visit the impressive city ruins of Aphrodisias. View one of the best preserved Roman stadiums, the impressive Temple of Aphrodite, the concert hall, market place, thermal baths and residences. A museum also displays many fine sculptures. Travel on to view Pamukkale, high in the hills and built-up over a period of 10,000 years, a series of calcium deposits have created terraced pools which are fed by warm thermal water. Make a final visit to the remains of Hieropolis nearby, with its impressive amphitheatre. Return to the hotel for evening meal. Overnight: Kusadasi. Day 6: Internal flight from Izmir to Istanbul Free time, for last minute bargaining in the markets of Kusadasi, prior to the departure for the internal flight from Izmir to Istanbul. Transfer to your hotel. Overnight: Istanbul. Day 7: Istanbul A visit of old Istanbul to include the Byzantine Church of St. Sophia, one of the finest buildings ever constructed, and the Topkapi Palace, the ancient residence of the Ottoman Sultans, built in 1462 and containing a dazzling array of jewellery, treasures and artefacts. A visit will also be made to the Blue Mosque and there will be an opportunity to visit the colourful Bazaar, the biggest oriental market in the world. Overnight: Istanbul. Day 8: Cruise along the Bosphorus Sea and return to the UK Breakfast (last meal included). Subject to flight timings morning boat cruise along the Bosphorus Sea. Transfer to the airport for the return flight to the UK. |
